Every Mistake I've Made Buying Cars (A Confession)

A founder's diary, entry two: the rusted one, the rushed one, and the one that got away. Tuition fees, itemised.

Behind every confident buying guide is a person who paid full tuition at the school of bad decisions. Consider this my transcript.

The one I bought in the rain

Rain is a car dealer's best friend. It hides swirl marks, fills panel gaps, makes tired paint glow, and rushes you into the warm office where the paperwork lives. My first mistake had four owners, a respray in a slightly wrong shade, and I noticed all of it - on the first sunny day. Lesson: never inspect wet, never decide cold, wet or hungry.

The one I bought with my ears

A seller who talks the whole test drive is doing sound-masking, and it works. He narrated that entire drive like Attenborough, and underneath the anecdotes lived a gearbox whine that cost four figures. Lesson: one lap of the drive in total silence. Insist on it. The car will tell you everything.

The one I didn't buy

Honest colour, honest kilometres, folder of receipts thick as a phone book, priced fair. I asked for one night to think. It sold in ninety minutes. A decade later I still check the classifieds like an ex's Instagram. Lesson: when everything is right, hesitation is the risk.

The audit

Every mistake had the same root: I wanted the car more than I wanted the truth. The whole Learn section of this site is, honestly, just me writing letters to my younger self.

She wouldn't have listened either. She was already in the warm office, signing.
