Green Slips: Why the Price Varies and How to Pay Less
CTP insurance is compulsory in NSW - but paying too much for it isn't. Five minutes of reading, real money saved.

A green slip - compulsory third party (CTP) insurance - covers injuries to people if your car is in an accident. You cannot register a car in NSW without one. What most people don't know: the price varies between insurers, sometimes by hundreds of dollars, for identical cover.
The single most important fact
Green slip cover is set by law. Every insurer's green slip covers the same thing. There is no premium version. Which means the only question that matters is price - and prices differ because insurers assess your risk differently.
How to pay less
- Use the official NSW Green Slip Price Check tool (run by SIRA, the state regulator) before every renewal. It compares every licensed insurer for your exact car and driver profile in about two minutes.
- Never auto-renew blind. Your current insurer is under no obligation to be competitive, and loyalty is not rewarded in this market.
- Check whether your comprehensive insurer offers a discount for holding both policies - sometimes real, sometimes marketing.
What changes the price
Your postcode, your age and driving record, the car itself, how it's used (private vs business), and whether you're eligible for input tax credits. You can't change most of these - which is exactly why comparing insurers is the lever that's actually in your hands.
Queen's tips
- Diarise the comparison two weeks before rego renewal (our app will do this for you soon - that's a promise, not a tease).
- The green slip must be bought before you renew rego; it's transmitted electronically, no paper to hand over.
- If your circumstances changed this year - moved suburbs, went from business to private use - reprice. It can move the number meaningfully.
