Own Your Car

Your First Track Day, Properly

What actually happens at a Sydney Motorsport Park open day, what it costs, and why your road car is almost certainly enough.

Wed 17 June 2026 · Queen of Cars

The best-kept secret in Australian motoring: you can drive your own car on a Grand Prix circuit, legally, this month, without anyone checking your lap times or your gender at the gate. Here's the honest run-through.

The truth about who's there

Track days are friendlier than car parks. Everyone was a beginner once, the culture is fiercely anti-showoff (crashing your own car is deeply unfashionable), and novice groups are exactly that - novices, in hatchbacks and dailies, driving at seven-tenths and grinning.

What it costs

Entry for an open day at Sydney Motorsport Park typically runs a few hundred dollars. Helmets can usually be hired. Your car needs: good tyres, healthy brakes, fresh fluid, nothing loose in the cabin, and a full tank. That's it - the pink slip checklist covers most of it.

What to actually do

  • Book the novice group and say it's your first day - you'll often get a briefing buddy or an instructed lap.
  • First three laps: learn the line, ignore the mirror-fillers. Point-by passing rules mean nobody overtakes without your say-so.
  • Come in when your arms get quiet. Fatigue arrives silently around lap eight. There is no prize for staying out.
  • Check tyre pressures between sessions - they rise when hot, and the numbers teach you more than any forum.

Why bother

Because the track is where the car finally answers honestly, at speeds the road can't legally ask. You will drive better on the road forever afterwards - calmer, further-sighted, unimpressed by traffic-light heroes.

Check the SMSP calendar for open days - several are listed in our Sydney Diary. General guidance, not professional advice; the organiser's briefing is the authority on the day.
